Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a gas safety certificate?

A gas safety inspection, carried out by a gas safe registered engineer takes approximately 1 hour during a site visit. The resulting Gas Safety Record which is required by landlords for rented properties – this includes Airbnb properties as well as standard rented homes – is available immediately after the inspection is completed.

Do I need a Gas Safety Certificate?

Landlords renting properties to tenants or advertising on Airbnb (or other similar services) are required to have a gas safety inspection once a year.

If you’re a homeowner, a Gas Safety Certificate is not a requirement, but we recommend a gas safety inspection is undertaken alongside your annual boiler service – which is necessary to fulfil the requirements of your boiler warranty and for preventative maintenance.

How can I get a reminder to service my boiler?

Once you’ve become a Plumberoo customer, we can reach out to you once each year by telephone, email, SMS or WhatsApp to remind you about getting a boiler service.

We’ll then book in an appointment at a time convenient for you or your tenants.

What’s included in a Gas Safety Inspection?

Having an annual check is so important for the safety of a property – this is one of the reasons it’s required by law than landlords maintain the pipework.

Unsafe appliances can cause carbon monoxide poisoning or fires as a result of gas leaks, and preventing these is the main goal of the Gas Safety Certificate.

As part of a full boiler service, we will carry out the following:

  • Inspect the pipework condition and test it for leaks
  • Ensure appliances are properly set and adjusted so that gas burns correctly
  • Ensure appliances are suitable for the space, and that they’re safely installed and stable
  • Check the air supply is adequate
  • Analysis of exhaust gases to ensure gas is being burnt per the manufacturers recommendations
  • A check of the appliance’s condition including seals and gaskets, signs of distress, burn marks from heat, and cleanliness of heat exchangers
  • Check for the presence of and test your carbon monoxide alarm

Frequently asked questions

What is power flushing for central heating systems?

Power flushing is a method used by professional heating engineers to thoroughly clean a central heating system. Sludge and debris (magnetite) build up in systems over time and it can dramatically reduce the efficiency of your heating. A dirty system can also void warranties on new boilers.

By having Plumberoo power flush your system, you can save money on your energy bill – since your boiler won’t work so hard to circulate heat around the property – and prevent breakdowns and wear and tear on the boiler and other heating components.

What is smart heating?

Smart heating can be achieved in a range of ways, usually involving a smart thermostat such as a Google Nest, or a system of individual smart thermostats fitted to each radiator such as the Tado system. Plumberoo can advise you on how best to upgrade your existing plumbing to a smart system.

If you’re installing electric radiators or underfloor heating, these can have smart, app controlled hardware too.

Most systems with app control can also be activated by voice, through integrations with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

Frequently asked questions

I have a burst pipe, what should I do?

Three quick steps:

  1. Find your mains stopcock and turn it off, this will stop the water supply and minimise damage
  2. If you don’t know where it is, call us we may be able to guide you to it
  3. Book a Plumberoo engineer to help diagnose and remedy the cause of the problem
Can Plumberoo increase my water pressure?

We find that there are always gains to be made if you’re not satisfied with your water pressure. It might be that your plumbing needs a clean and descaling, or that there’s a faulty valve in the system, or that your gravity fed supply needs a booster pump to increase the incoming pressure.

Plumberoo can advise on any of these solutions if you get in touch.

Should I get a water softener?

If you live in a hard water area, you might suffer from a lot more limescale than if you had softened water – this usually means you spend more time cleaning, and find you get dirty shower screens and smears on your appliances.

You can check your water quality here.

People find that soft water, which contains less calcium and magnesium, is kinder to skin and hair when used for showers and baths. Soap also lathers more quickly when mixed with soft water, and you’ll find your shampoos, gels and soaps last longer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my toilet keep blocking?

If you use too much paper, wet wipes or other sanitary products down your toilet, this can lead to a blockage. Other common causes include:

  • Damage to the drains
  • Defective joints
  • Weak flush

Plumberoo can help diagnose the root cause by using cameras to inspect your drains. We can then offer an appropriate remedy.

How to avoid blocking a kitchen sink

The best recommendations to avoid this are:

  • Use a strainer over the plug hole to catch large debris
  • Don’t pour fat and grease down the drain
  • Consider letting excess fat solidify and throwing it in the bin instead
  • Use foil and greaseproof paper to collect and throw oil away during cooking
What to do if your drain is overflowing

The most immediate advice is to stop adding to the blockage. Ideally, limit the use of water and avoid flushing your toilet until the drainage issue has been resolved. If you’re facing a flooding emergency, call a plumber.

As other reviewers, my experience was great. Attended a blocked drain on the day I called, at the time stated. Really friendly can-do antipodean plumber, who worked hard and resolved the problem which required some heavy duty kit and a drain camera. Invoice was correct and fair for time worked. Can’t fault them.

Frequently asked questions

What are the main components of an air conditioning system?

The main components of an air conditioning system are:

Condenser: This is located outside the building and releases the heat absorbed from inside. It typically includes a compressor, condenser coil, and a fan. These square units with a fan are commonly seen on the outside of many types of commercial buildings.

Indoor Unit: This contains the evaporator coil, blower fan, and the air vents that circulate the cooled air inside the space. It also includes the control system, such as a thermostat or remote control. These units are mounted close to the top of a wall, and come in a range of sizes to suit the designated room.

In the case of more integrated systems, like those found in new buildings or during major renovations, there may also be ductwork installed in walls and ceilings to distribute the air throughout the interior through vents.

Can I use AC instead of central heating?

If you already have central heating, then it might be more efficient to use it for heating your entire home during the winter. But air conditioning is capable of both heating and cooling. Plumberoo would be happy to discuss your options and the pros and cons of each.

How often should I service my air conditioner?

It’s generally recommended to service your air conditioner once a year to keep it running efficiently. This annual service should be done by a professional to inspect and clean the system, check refrigerant levels, and ensure all components are functioning properly.

In addition to the yearly service, filters should be checked monthly and replaced if needed. Clogged or dirty filters can reduce airflow and efficiency. You can easily check the filters yourself, and they’re typically located within the indoor unit or near the air handler.

Can I install air conditioning in my house or flat?

There is usually a route to installing air conditioning in most properties – for houses or bungalows where site access is straight forward, we can almost always find a solution.

With apartment buildings, there can be more challenges in regards to the rules of the lease and what is feasible, but it’s still common to see them retrofitted.

For all installation jobs Plumberoo conducts a site survey in order to make tailored recommendations.
